Medical Condition: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the most common viral encephalitis, with over 50,000 cases reported annually. It is a considerable public health problem for many Asian countries (WHO 1997). Close to 3 billion people now live in regions at risk for the disease, particularly in rural areas where JE occurs sporadically in epidemics of variable magnitude. Vaccination against JE remains the single most important control measure worldwide.

Medical Condition: Acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) CSC is an acute idiopathic chorioretinopathy. While the majority of cases is characterized by a self-limited course, chronic CSC is seen in up to one third of patients. Case reports and first results of small case series have recently been published about the use of intravitreal bevacizumab with promising results. It is not known if Lucentis (Ranibizumab) may yield same or better results in CSC and prove superior to observation alone.;Therapeutic area: Diseases [C] - Eye Diseases [C11]

Medical Condition: Tinnitus is a symptom defined as a perceived sound in the absence of an external source. Its prevalence is reported to be about 10%-15% of the general population and currently there is no cure for tinnitus. Recent research showed that changes in neuronal activity might underlie tinnitus pathology. Several recent studies, which are in general case-reports, show that tinnitus complaints may be reduced by restoring peripheral auditory neural activity by means of intracochlear electrical stimulation. However, structured studies to improve knowledge of the optimal stimulus parameters are limited.
