The impact of weather variables on the development of rice leaf blast disease in sundarban region, West Bengal

Abstract Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major crop grown in India and other parts of South Asia, and in many other countries across the world. Rice leaf blast is one of the most devastating diseases of both seedlings and the plants up to the tillering stage. However, the impact of several meteorological variables on the development of rice leaf blast disease in Indian states is remained undetermined. The present investigation aimed to study the effect of different weather parameters (temperature, relative humidity and rainfall) in Sundarban region of West Bengal on the rice blast disease development during Kharif (June - October) and Boro (November - May) season. Correlation co-efficient and stepwise multiple regression analyses were performed to find out the most critical weather parameter(s) contributing much towards the severity of blast disease. Temperature (Max. and Min), rainfall had negative correlation with the severity of the disease whereas, relative humidity (Max. and Min.) showed positive correlation during Kharif season. During Boro season, all the weather variables had positive correlation with leaf blast severity of rice. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that minimum temperature during Kharif and Boro season of the year 2016-17 and maximum relative humidity during Boro 2017-18 proved the most critical weather parameters responsible for blast disease development. It is seemed that climate change and climate variability are the relevant drivers for plant disease epidemiology. However, more epidemiological studies are still required to characterize the actual and critical factors to forecast and predict the blast disease of rice..
