IoT enabled smart dustbin with messaging alert system

Abstract The internet of things (IoT) is now able to incorporate an ample number of systems to provide access to a large amount of data and services for the development of the ecosystem of the digital and automation world. Urban development is taking place rapidly, and small cities and towns are emerging as a hub for urbanization. Unfortunately, waste management still remains a primary concern for the cities irrespective of the development taking place. The key factor responsible for this is the overflowed dustbins in public areas and garbage collector bins placed for society or complex use. It leads to various hazardous issues like the spread of diseases, bad odor, facilitating the growth of insects, mosquitoes, and giving ugliness to the place. To eliminate all these issues, IoT-enabled devices could be installed at such places based on requirements that could work hygienically and alert the concerned authority of its filling status. The primary purpose of the work is to develop an intelligent solution for public places of garbage clearance alert system for waste management. This paper proposes an IoT-based smart dustbin with an alert system that alerts the municipal members for instant clearing of garbage based on the remaining capacity to take in more waste. The work comes with an add-on functionality of automatic lid opening and closing when it detects a user nearby using a PIR (passive infrared) sensor, which keeps the person safe and free from coming in contact with any hazardous surface..
