Evaluation of the difference between feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)-infected and healthy cats by using clinicopathological parameters, oxidative stress, and total antioxidant power

Abstract Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is an important disease in cats worldwide. Infection with FIV results in lifelong viral persistence. However, the clinical outcomes of FIV-infected cats are variable, with many living approximately normal lifespans. The objective of this study was to compare physical examination and hematological parameters, oxidative stress, and total antioxidant power between FIV-infected and healthy cats. Cats were evaluated for FIV infection by an immunochromatographic assay. The study was carried out on 20 FIV-infected cats and 27 clinically healthy mixed-breed domestic cats. Body condition score, body weight, mucous membrane color score, vital signs, hematological parameters, oxidative stress, and total antioxidant power were examined. These parameters were compared between FIV-infected and healthy cats by using the t test (normal distribution data) and Wilcoxon rank-sum test (non-normal distribution data). Results showed that mucous membrane color score, packed cell volume, and hemoglobin of healthy cats were significantly higher than FIV-infected cats (P < 0.05). However, body condition scores, body weight, vital signs, other hematological parameters, malondialdehyde, and ferric reducing antioxidant power between FIV-infected and healthy cats were not significantly different (P > 0.05). These observations showed that FIV-infected cats were under anemia, did not have excessive oxygen free radicals, and their antioxidant system was not disturbed..
