Preparation and Application of Water-Resistant $ SiO_{2} $ Coated Naphthopyran Derivatives Based Photochromic Pigment in Fabricating Reversible Photochromic Cement Pastes
Abstract Present study herein reports the preparation and application of $ SiO_{2} $ coated photochromic pigment (SPC) in fabricating photochromic cement composite. Firstly, naphthopyran [3H-NPT] derivatives based photochromic pigment was coated with $ SiO_{2} $, after that, the cement pastes were prepared using coated photochromic pigment. The setting time analysis, hydration study, and compressive strength tests were performed. Furthermore, fatigue performances related to water-resistance and photochromic stability of SPC-based cement pastes were evaluated by performing color stability tests. The setting time and hydration studies revealed the set accelerating behavior of SPC on the cement pastes. The final setting time for the 0SPC (control cement paste) and 5SPC (cement paste with 5% SPC relative to cement weight) were 182 and 148 mins, respectively. Similarly, the 28-d compressive strength of 0SPC and 5SPC was measured to be 40 and 52 MPa, respectively. The fast setting and higher compressive strength achieved for SPC based cement pastes are due to the surficial-$ SiO_{2} $ coating around the photochromic pigment, promoting the greater formation of cement hydrates. The results of the color stability test demonstrated the stability of SPC pigment against hydrolysis when cement pastes were cured in water for 28 days.
