Production, quality control of next-generation PET radioisotope iodine-124 and its thyroid imaging

Abstract In this paper, 124Te(p,n)124I nuclear reaction was used for 124I production. The 124$ TeO_{2} $/$ Al_{2} $$ O_{3} $ target was irradiated by 12.5 MeV proton at 20 μA for 3–8 h in a medical cyclotron. After irradiation, 124I was purified by dry distillation and dissolved in 0.02 M NaOH, with radioactivity 370–1480 MBq. Micro-PET/CT imaging of 124I in healthy mice showed the thyroid and stomach accumulations and kidney metabolism, which may be useful for thyroid disease diagnosis.
