Lack of paid sick leave reduces use of preventive health care services

Preventive health care services such as flu vaccinations, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, and colonoscopy can prevent illness, allow for early diagnosis and treatment, and save lives. In 2010, preventive health care services were considered important enough that the Affordable Care Act eliminated the cost sharing borne by participants for 15 screenings recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force, including those for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and some cancer screenings. A recent study shows that one of the greatest barriers to using such preventive health care services is not cost but lack of paid sick leave..
