Chemistry and Pharmacology of Bioactive Molecule -Coenzyme Q10: A Brief Note

Introduction: Extensive research over the past years has reflected that Coenzyme Q 10 (abbreviated as CoQ 10 ), is lipophilic, similar to vitamins, present in eukaryotic cells, acts as the chief element in the electron transport chain and is involved in aerobic respiration, producing energy (ATP). Therefore, CoQ 10 is required in all energy based processes in the heart, including heart muscle contraction and the functioning of ATP regulated membrane channels. Chemistry and Pharmacological Properties: An important property of CoQ 10 includes membranestabilizing properties, which are mainly due to the free radical scavenging effect of CoQ 10 . Absorption and uptake mechanism of CoQ 10 follows the same pattern as lipids (such as vitamin E). Administration of CoQ 10 in hypertensive patients results in significant reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressure without affecting cardiac output or stroke volume. In addition, it protects the retinal cells from Sun radiations by neutralizing free radicals. Therefore, it can be said that CoQ 10 enhances the mitochondrial function of cell to rejuvenate the skin. Conclusion: The present review is devoted towards better understanding of the chemistry, including biosynthesis and biological attributes of CoQ 10 . In addition, it focuses the disease specific indications and the prophylactic and therapeutic nutraceutical qualities of CoQ 10 ..
