Avoiding Unnecessary Prostate Biopsies With MRI

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MP-MRI) used as a triage test for men with suspected prostate cancer may reduce unnecessary first biopsies and improve the detection of clinically significant cancer, according to results of a new study published in the Lancet. The MP-MRI, which provides information about prostate volume, cellularity, and vascularity, has significantly better sensitivity and negative predictive value for clinically important prostate cancer than standard transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy..
