Performing the Wrong Procedure

Even though there were no serious complications attributable to the wrong procedure, to simply ignore the fact is a suboptimal approach to the problem. If the processes that resulted in the wrong procedure are not corrected, errors will occur in the future, and some of those errors could be serious. There are 2 good reporting options. A hospital's chief of staff has the responsibility to ensure that the quality of care at the facility is optimal; he or she is the appropriate person to contact when problems occur in the delivery of medical care. However, most institutions have a number of personnel who can ensure that problems are appropriately reviewed and fixed. These include quality assurance officers and risk managers, among others. Most nurses are familiar with the complication (incident) reporting processes and how to ensure the appropriate personnel are notified when problems with the delivery of medical care are identified. Here, Minnier et al discuss how to correct the errors..
