New MRI techniques for imaging of head trauma: DWI, MRS, SWI - Although CT remains the first-line imaging procedure in the acute evaluation of head injury, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is becoming increasingly important for more detailed analysis of the degree and type of traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as for predicting clinical outcome. This article addresses the MR techniques of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), MR spectroscopy (MRS), and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), which provide valuable information that could significantly change the management of TBI.
