Norwegian physiotherapy students` concerns about infection during Covid-19 and learning outcomes in clinical placement. A cross-sectional study

Purpose: To describe physiotherapy students` fear of Covid-19 and explore how fear was associated with general health, psychological distress and quality of life, and to describe physiotherapy students` perceived learning outcomes in clinical placement. Design: Cross-sectional design. Material: Final year students at the bachelor`s program at the Department of Physiotherapy at OsloMet. Method: Fear of Covid-19 was measured with the Fear of Covid-19 Scale, quality of life was measured on a 0-10 scale, health was assessed with one question about the self-perceived health condition and psychological distress was measured with the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist-5. Various factors related to clinical practice were also mapped. Results: A total of 90 students (58%) participated. Students reported poorer health and quality of life than comparable groups pre pandemic. Higher fear of infection was associated with higher scores for psychological distress, lower scores for quality of life and lower odds for reporting good health. Many students were afraid of becoming infected or infecting others, although most students reported adequate knowledge of protective measures. The students were also concerned about the pandemic`s negative consequences for completion of practice and perceived learning outcomes in clinical placement. Conclusion: Physiotherapy students reported poorer quality of life and health during the pandemic, which is in accordance with other surveys. There is also reason to take seriously the concern the students have had for learning outcomes in practice when these students will shortly start their internship..
