Askiz Type of Plates from Mordovian Burial No. 6 of Atkar Burial Ground

The paper describes materials of the Askiz type from burial No. 6 of Atkar burial ground from the excavations supervised by S.Yu. Monakhov in 1979–80. This paired burial of a man and woman, rather typical of the Mordovian complexes of the 13th–14th centuries, contains a rich and diverse inventory, which in particular includes iron plates and their fragments from the male complex. Such products have stylistic and technological analogies in the vast spaces of Eurasia in the territory of the Golden Horde state. The form and technology of their manufacture are connected with the technological traditions of the Askiz culture of the 13th–14th centuries. Based on the peculiarity of the appearance of Atkar plates, a plate classification scheme is proposed. This will allow them to be distinguished during systematization from the vast array of iron plates of the Middle Ages. In order to determine the functional purpose of such plates, the author analyzes their location in the complexes of grave inventories. Due to the fact that they were discovered in burials dated by coins, the time of their distribution corresponds to the turn of the 14th century. Mapping of the ‘symbolic’ overlays allows to suggest that their carriers may have taken part in the chronicle events which are historically referred to as ‘Dudenev’s Army’..
