A Bibliometric Analysis of the Top 100 Most Cited Scientific Publication Based in Türkiye or Collaborative in Infectious Diseases (1970-2020)

Introduction: Emergence of infectious diseases has negative effects on public health and the economy. For this reason, academicians and experts need more information in the field of infectious diseases. The purpose of this study is to analyse the top 100 scientific studies which were published between 1970 and 2020 in the indexed journals of “Science Citation Index (SCI)” and “SCI expanded (SCIE)” in the field of infectious diseases and which were the most cited, Türkiye-based or partnered. Materials and Methods: Using the Web of Science (WoS) database, the most cited 100 scientific studies published in the field of infectious diseases in science citation index (SCI) and SCI expanded indexed journals in our Türkiye until 15.12.2020 have been determined. The publication year of the top 100 most cited scientific studies, the publishing journal and their impact factor, the number of citations of the publications, and average number of citations per year were determined. Descriptive analysis and content analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, were used in the analysis of the data. Results: Total number of publications contributed to the scientific literature in the field of infectious diseases by the scientists of our country from 1970 until 15.12.2020 is 3998. Total number of citations to these publications is 47.254, and when self-citations are excluded, the number of citations is 45.706, and the average number of citations per publication is 15.72. When we examined the first 100 scientific studies, the total number of citations was 17.763. The most cited scientific study is the one titled “ESCMID* guideline for the diagnosis and management of Candida diseases 2012: Non-neutropenic adult patients” a multicenter study written by Cornely et al., in 2012 with 665 citations and published in the journal named “Clinical Microbiology and Infection”. As of 15.12.2020, 498.719 scientific studies on infectious diseases have been published in the WoS database. Studies submitted from Türkiye constitutes 0.8% of those submitted from all over the world. Conclusion: We have studies with high impact factor published in the indexed journals of SCI and SCI expanded, however our contribution to the literature in the field of infectious diseases still seems limited..
