Noul Emirat Afgan – o lecție despre limitele conceptului occidental al democrației

After a century of monarchy, with modernising tendencies in the 1960s, Afghanistan entered a long era of political crisis, beginning with the coup d'état of Mohammad Daoud Khan - the prince who installed himself as president with Soviet help (1973). Another coup led to a full communist regime and a decade of Soviet military invasion (1979-1989). During this time, many religious rebel groups waged a war of resistance, at the end of which a new phase of crisis, driven by rivalry between Islamic groups, began. In 1996, the Taliban radicals came to power, establishing the Islamic emirate and supporting al-Qaeda terrorism. After 11 September 2001, the US supported the Northern Alliance in the fight against the Taliban, who were ousted from power in 2002. Nineteen years of reform followed in Afghanistan, with Western support, to create a democratic society and a modern state. The Afghan world, with its system of tribal relations and political patronage, has not been permeable to liberal democracy. Eroded by corruption and ideologically weakened, unable to provide a decent living for its citizens, the Afghan state fell under Taliban assault in August 2021, demonstrating that Western forms of democracy cannot be effectively exported to Asian tribal societies..
