This paper deals with the economic evaluation of innovative infection prevention. Central topics are a stakeholder-based hygiene management and an implementation of a pre-admission screening of multi-drug resistant organism (MDRO). Assessment of the current situation is crucial before introducing innovative infection prevention measures. According to the literature, hospital managers should take on the role of “power promoters” in adopting infection prevention measures due to their position and decision-making authority. However, there is no empirical evidence for whether or not this assumption is valid. This paper reports German hospital managers’ perceptions of current challenges in infection prevention and control and innovative prevention measures. Since 2016 the MDRO network KOMPASS e. V. has implemented a pre-admission screening of multi-drug resistant organism in the region Vorpommern-Greifswald exemplary as part of the Project PRIME (pre-admission screening of multi-drug resistant organism). To succeed, challenges of various kinds had to be identified and managed. These included, above all, the overcoming of sectoral boundaries in the healthcare sector, e. g. the coordination between the attending doctor and the hospital as well as the secure transmission of information in compliance with data protection.
