MRSA is – not only in the inpatient, but also in the outpatient sector – a big challenge in the German healthcare system. Particularly the treatment of patients with chronic wounds requires increased attention. The presented study is based on the research questions a) if an MRSA eradication in the outpatient setting is successful for patients with chronic wounds and b) it the revenues related to the treatment cover the costs. The results are founded on the analysis of a) the review from the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians for German Ministery of Health b) account data from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and c) the MEracL (MRSA eradication for chronic lesions) study data which are foccused on MRSA eradication. The following five core statements are derived from the study: 1) MRSA eradication can be performed successfully in the outpatient sector. 2) Chronic Wounds are a risk factor for MRSA but not a limitation for MRSA eradication in the outpatient setting. 3) There are regional differences in the willingness of practitioners in the outpatient setting to perform a MRSA eradication. 4) The calculated revenues for the treatment do not cover the cost in the doctor´s practices. 5) The budget for MRSA eradication should be strategically allocated and used for the treatment in both sectors, the outpatient and inpatient one.
